BICYCLES

Cycling in Cambridge

When you live in the number one cycling city in the UK, bikes are a must.

You must buy a proper lock (ideally a D-lock) for your bike and avoid leaving it in town overnight. Cambridge might have some of the best cycling infrastructure in the country, but it’s also the worst location for bike theft (another thing that we’re better than Oxford at). So be vigilant.
For extra security and peace of mind, look into how you can lock your front wheel, in addition to your back wheel and frame.

You can find a guide outlining how to protect your bicycle from theft (and what to do if it does go missing), here. And a handy video on how to best use bike locks here.

If you are cycling in the dark, you must affix lights to your bike. A front light must emit a white light, and a rear light must emit a red light. If you are caught without lights, or with the wrong coloured lights in the wrong positions, you can be subject to an on-the-spot fine of £50 or more.

When buying a bike in Cambridge, avoid using Facebook marketplace. Unfortunately, many bikes sold on this platform are stolen; if you are found in possession of someone else’s bike (and they can prove that it is theirs), it can be taken from you and returned to its rightful owner by police.

Good places to buy a bike (or get your current setup fixed) in the centre of town are:

Or, if you live in East or non-Central Cambridge, Bicycle Ambulance, close to the Abbey Stadium.
